Is ESRT Body Armor Level III?

The ESRT doesn’t fit the mold of other plates, because it isn’t like other special threat plates. While the NIJ Level III standard requires six impacts of (very rare) 7.62X51 M80 NATO Steel jacketed rounds, it doesn’t require common penetrator threats like M855 that easily defeat Level III plates and can be found in any American gun store. But when the NIJ looked to revise their rifle protection standards, they still missed more modern domestic threats like M855A1 and common foreign threats like 7.62X39 API-BZ.

Level III+ plates are too thick to conceal due to the NIJ steel-jacketed M80 testing standard–a round you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere outside of foreign NATO military arsenals. Plus, it’s already been made obsolete and replaced by the M80A1 in US military stockpiles. It simply doesn’t make any sense to use with real-world armor testing. Plainclothes operators working foreign or domestic areas shouldn’t have to choose one threat or the other. Low visibility doesn’t have to also mean low protection.

For those facing high threat intermediate rifle cartridges from AR-15 and/or also AK-47 platforms–penetrator or not–the ESRT is the ultimate in low-visibility armor. Whether defending from enemies foreign or domestic, there is no better low-signature option than the ESRT. There simply isn’t any other special threat plate that’s as thin, light, and also multi-hit capable.
